Our Mission

Advancing health and wellness with safe donor milk.

Our Vision

A world where human milk is accessible to all, beginning at birth.

A legacy of helping babies thrive

Mothers’ Milk Bank California is the oldest operating non profit milk bank in North America. Founded in 1974, we are dedicated to meeting the growing demand for human donor milk by collecting, screening, and distributing it to over 60% of California’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICUs), as well as to babies and families in need across the United States.

As a charter member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA), Mothers’ Milk Bank California has helped set the industry standard for milk collection and donation. We remain committed to our legacy, and adhere to the highest levels of care, safety, and equity for those we serve: donors, recipients, families grieving the loss of a baby, hospitals, community partners, and healthcare professionals.

16+ million ounces and counting

We recognize the tremendous benefits of human milk in preventing disease and illness, fighting infection, and providing hundreds of vital nutrients for babies from day one. At the same time, we know that there are so many reasons why breast milk isn’t accessible to those who need or want it: premature birth, death or loss of mother, surrogacy, foster, or adoption, insufficient lactation, and more. We are committed to making human donor milk available to all babies and families in need.

Who We Serve

Mothers’ Milk Bank California serves babies, families, and healthcare providers across the United States. Though most of our recipients are premature infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), we provide safe, pasteurized human donor milk for any of the following scenarios:

Babies who…

  • are adopted, foster, surrogate, or premature
  • have low birth weight
  • are formula intolerant
  • have immunological deficiencies
  • need post-operation nutrition
  • are born to gender-diverse parents.

Mothers who…

  • have passed away
  • are absent from the baby’s care
  • have insufficient lactation
  • have an illness or health risk that requires interruption or supplementation in feedings.

We recognize that all babies and families have diverse short-term and long-term needs, and that is why we provide a variety of options to ensure peace of mind for everyone involved in the baby’s care.
